What is Internet of Everything?
Your daily computer experience is most likely like mine. Normal email routine, some social media, and a couple of sites you visit. Truthfully for me it’s starting to become a big yawn and I suspect for you as well. That’s going to change in a big way with the Internet of Everything.
If you thought you’re connected today, just wait. Imagine a world where it isn’t just computers exchanging information, but everything. I’m talking about your auto, air conditioners, blood pressure cuffs, coffeemakers, business phones, televisions… everything! Enter Internet of things and Internet of Everything.
We’re already starting to see this in our homes. Our thermostat can be controlled, and data collected, through a smartphone application connected to the internet. Healthcare vitals can be taken and tracked at our local grocery store, or smartphone, to give us a heads-up to see a doctor. This is just the tip of the iceberg!
Internet of Things Explained
It’s not about putting a computer interface on all your electronic items. It’s about making these items “aware”. Having them share data and maybe even respond to it. As we have overwhelmingly adopted the always on devices (smartphones, tablets) the enabled “things” will be controlled and data gathered by them. IoT will be about applications and mobility over the cloud. It already is.
The Internet of Things, while a technological revolution, will also have some real economic and social impacts.
“As the old adage states, ‘you can’t manage what you can’t measure.’ An important benefit from IoT will be in driving up productivity in the sectors of our economy where we need it most – encouraging wellness, energy efficiency, and transportation throughput, among others. We’ll have far more precise ‘feedback loops’ which will improve recommendations for living better lives.” – Aneesh Chopra, former U.S. Chief Technology Officer and bestselling author of Innovative State
Internet of Things and Internet of Security Concerns
We have all seen the science fiction movies where this has gone horribly wrong. This doomsday scenario, while something to consider, is truly science fiction. Everyone that is involved in machine to machine (M2M) technology is taking this serious with safeguards and precautions that are either developed or being developed. Some of the greatest minds are discussing and designing safeguards towards IoT security for today and the future.
Is IoT Here to Stay or Just Another Fad?
“The growth in IoT will far exceed that of other connected devices. By 2020, the number of smartphones tablets and PCs in use will reach about 7.3 billion units,” said Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner. “In contrast, the IoT will have expanded at a much faster rate, resulting in a population of about 26 billion units at that time.”
Yes, that is 26 Billion units! This is growing at an exponential rate like none other seen before. Get ready for the ride and I for one am excited about it’s future.
